Recognize and Motivate: Nominate a Colleague for ACC’s “Top 10 30-Somethings”

Guest Blogger: Emily Jelich is Vice President, Enterprise Optimization, and Associate General Counsel with the Royal Bank of Canada. Ms. Jelich is also a Professional Ambassador for the United Way, and a member of the ACC Value Challenge Steering Committee.

As an associate general counsel and vice president of the Royal Bank of Canada, I have a fairly extensive mandate that includes enterprise optimization, global capital markets and global dispute management. All of my team members are terrific, and, as is the case for many of us, I can never reward them enough for the great work that they do. As a result, I feel it’s important to take advantage of external rewards, allowing team members to be recognized as leaders in our profession or industry.

Last year, I chose to nominate Alison Burton for ACC’s Top 10 30-Somethings Awards. As I said, everyone on my team is terrific, but Alison stood out to me for the additional contribution that she has made to our company and our community in leading the RBC General Counsel Group’s Pro Bono Program. Through Alison’s leadership, participation in the Program has grown significantly, which means that we are helping more people. This allows the RBC General Counsel Group to make a real difference in the communities in which we work. Alison is a highly respected employment lawyer and leads a team of dedicated professionals, but her additional passion to the Pro Bono Program struck me as a differentiator.

 And it was. Alison was chosen as a winner of ACC’s 2012 Top 10 30-Somethings contest. The ability to nominate her for “going above and beyond” allowed me to publicly recognize Alison’s achievements and, hopefully, to motivate others to make a difference. I encourage others to take advantage of this dual benefit. It is particularly helpful to have an award that is restricted to emerging leaders: There are few opportunities to recognize rising stars in a way that highlights their achievements to date and their potential for tomorrow.
